Carbon Looper: Carbon Dioxide Capturing Cellulosic Materials

A cellulosic yarn, functionalised by amine containing molecules, has been developed to capture CO2 from the surrounding air. This project has developed cellulosic yarns with CO2 adsorbing properties by TEMPO mediated oxidation of cellulose and amine functionalisation via a grafting reaction. These yarns can be used to produce textiles and may contribute to the reduction of CO2 levels in the environment if they are used in large quantities in everyday life. This invention is a new product fostering sustainable development of the environment.

Application
  • Carbon Looper is made by TEMPO mediated oxidation of cellulose, followed by the amine functionalisation via grafting reaction.
  • Rinse the yarns to remove non-reacted chemicals; after that, the yarns can be used to produce textiles.
Industry Benefit
  • The production process of Carbon Looper generates no toxic reagents and consumes little energy.
  • It requires no special equipment, thus permitting production to be scaled up using existing textile processing machinery, such as the yarn dyeing machine.
  • The captured CO2 may be released in gas form for planting or making chemicals for the textile industry, such as dyeing.
Technological Breakthrough

Textile products made from Carbon Looper are able to adsorb approximately 0.4-1mmol CO2/g, which is equivalent to 17-44g CO2/kg of textile products – a comparable adsorbing amount to a tree which takes in 15-60g a day.
